Louisville’s Water Heater Repair Plumbers

Most Water Heater Problems Are One Part

A water heater is a simple machine. On a gas heater, the part that fails is usually the thermocouple, the igniter, or the gas control valve. On an electric heater, it is usually a heating element or a thermostat. Each of those is a single swap, and each costs a fraction of a new heater.

The one thing that cannot be repaired is the tank itself. If water is coming from the tank body or the base, the steel has rusted through, and the only fix is a replacement. We will tell you that on the phone, so you do not pay for a repair visit that ends in the same answer.

Age matters too. Under about 8 years old, a repair is almost always the smart money. Past 10 to 12 years, we show you both prices, because repairs on an aging tank carry no warranty. Repair or replace: the math walks through it.

What We Do

Water Heater Repairs We Do in Louisville, KY

Real prices from our price book, quoted before we start.

Thermocouple Replacement, $200–$300

The most common gas water heater repair. When the pilot lights and then goes out, the thermocouple is usually the part that has stopped holding the gas valve open.

  • Pilot that will not stay lit
  • Tested before we leave
  • Common part, on the truck
  • Same-day in most cases

Gas Control Valve, $600–$700

No flame at all, or a control that will not hold, points to the gas control valve. It is the most expensive single part on a gas tank, so on an older heater we price a replacement next to it.

  • No flame or no response
  • Gas connections leak-tested
  • Both prices shown on an older heater
  • You choose

Heating Element, $300–$400

On an electric heater, lukewarm water or hot water that runs out fast usually means a failed element. We test both elements and the thermostats before we replace anything.

  • Electric tank water heaters
  • Elements and thermostats tested
  • Power off and tank drained safely
  • Checked at the tap after

Pilot Relight, Under $100

Sometimes the pilot only needs to be relit. If a relight is all it takes, that is what you pay for, and we tell you if the thermocouple looks like it is on its way out.

  • Quick check of the burner
  • Flame color checked
  • No parts sold you do not need

Burner Cleaning & Flame Check

A lazy yellow flame or soot on top of the heater means the burner needs to be pulled and cleaned. A clean blue flame heats faster and burns cleaner.

  • Burner pulled and cleaned
  • Venting checked for draft
  • Soot cleared
  • Flame checked after

Relief Valve & Leak Repair

A dripping relief valve, a leaking drain valve, or a loose fitting can be fixed. A leak from the tank body cannot, and we will tell you which one you have before any work starts.

  • Pressure relief valve service
  • Drain valves and fittings
  • Supply line connections
  • Tank leaks identified honestly

How It Works

From No Hot Water to Fixed, in Order

You know the price before any part goes in.

1

Make it safe while you wait

If the tank is leaking, close the cold-water valve on top of the heater and turn off the gas or the breaker. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside.

2

Find the failed part

Pilot, thermocouple, gas valve, element, or thermostat. We test before we replace, so you do not pay for parts the heater did not need.

3

Price it, then you decide

You get the repair price before we start. On a heater past about ten years old, you also get the replacement price, and you choose.

4

Repair and test

The part goes in, the burner or elements are tested, and we check for hot water at the tap before we leave.

Repair or Replace?

When a Repair Is the Right Call

We fix what is worth fixing and say so when it is not.

Repair It When...

  • The heater is under about 8 years old
  • The problem is one part: thermocouple, element, thermostat, or valve
  • The tank itself is dry and holding water
  • The repair is a small share of a new heater
  • You want more time before a planned upgrade

Replace It When...

  • Water is coming from the tank body or the base
  • The heater is 10 to 12 years old or more
  • The hot water is rusty every time
  • The same part has failed more than once
  • The repair is a big share of a new heater

FAQ

Water Heater Repair Questions, Answered

How much does water heater repair cost in Louisville?
From our price book: a thermocouple is $200–$300, a gas control valve $600–$700, and an electric heating element $300–$400. If the pilot only needs a relight, that is under $100. We quote the price before we start.
Why does my pilot light keep going out?
Most of the time it is the thermocouple, the small sensor that keeps the gas valve open while the pilot burns. When it wears out, the pilot lights and then goes out. A dirty pilot tube or a draft problem can do it too, which is why we test before we replace. More on pilot lights.
Can a leaking water heater be repaired?
It depends where the water comes from. A leaking relief valve, drain valve, or fitting can be fixed. Water from the tank body or the base means the tank has rusted through, and that cannot be repaired. How to tell which leak you have.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old water heater?
Not if the tank leaks. A thermocouple or a control valve on an older gas heater can still make sense, but repairs on an aging tank carry no warranty, so we show you both prices and you choose. How long water heaters last.
