Why do my pipes bang or hammer when I shut the water off?

Here’s what’s actually happening when you hear that bang. Water moving through your pipes has real momentum. If pressure seems strong everywhere, it’s worth having it measured — it may be a pressure-reducing valve that needs adjusting or replacing.
