Copper vs PEX: which is better for repiping?
The short answer
For most whole-home repipes today, PEX is the better value — it costs less (a 10-foot run runs about $300–$400 installed versus $500–$600 for copper), installs faster, resists Louisville’s hard-water scale and freeze damage better, and it’s what we install most. Copper still wins in a few specific spots: it’s proven over decades, handles high heat, and holds up in sunlight where PEX can’t. Neither is “wrong,” and both meet code — but for a typical Louisville house, PEX usually gets you more of the home repiped for the same money.
If you’re staring down a repipe, the copper-versus-PEX question usually shows up fast, and there’s a lot of strong opinion attached to it. Here’s the plain version: copper is the metal pipe that’s been in walls for generations, and PEX is the flexible plastic tubing that’s become the standard for new plumbing over the last couple of decades. Both are approved, both work, and both will outlive most of the reasons people worry about them. The right pick comes down to where the pipe runs and what your water is doing to it.
When PEX is the right call
For the bulk of a home’s water lines, PEX is what we reach for, and it’s usually the honest recommendation. It’s cheaper as a material, and because it’s flexible it installs faster with far fewer fittings and joints — which means fewer places to ever leak and fewer holes cut in your walls to run it. It also handles the two things that give Louisville homes trouble: hard-water scale and freezing. PEX handles a freeze better than rigid copper, though no pipe is truly freeze proof. Frozen pipes still have to be thawed the right way. That combination is why a PEX repipe often gets you the whole house done for what a partial copper job might cost.

- More forgiving in a freeze PEX can expand a bit if water in it freezes, so it’s less likely to split than rigid copper. That’s real insurance for Louisville crawlspaces, garages, and exterior walls in a hard January.
- Shrugs off hard-water scale and corrosion Louisville’s hard water and the pinhole corrosion that eats older copper simply aren’t PEX’s problem. It doesn’t corrode from the inside the way aging copper can.

Some homeowners also simply prefer it for exposed runs or for how it reads to a buyer. When one of those situations applies, copper is worth the extra cost — it just usually applies to specific runs, not the whole house.

- High-heat and exposed spots Copper handles higher temperatures without concern, which is why we’ll often use it for the short runs right off the water heater — a copper run there costs about $500–$600 per 10 feet, worth it for that specific spot.
- Anywhere it sees sunlight UV light degrades standard PEX over time, so for exposed exterior runs or anywhere sunlight reaches the pipe, copper is the durable choice.
- Resale and appearance On exposed runs where the pipe is visible, some homeowners prefer the look of copper, and in certain sales it reads as a premium.
- No worry about rodents In a crawlspace or attic with a pest history, metal pipe removes the small chance of a rodent chewing tubing — a rare issue, but a real one in some homes.

Here’s the honest breakdown of how we approach a real repipe:
- PEX for the whole-home repipe For a typical Louisville house, a PEX repipe gets the whole home done reliably for less, with fewer joints and less demolition. That’s our default recommendation, and it’s not because it’s cheaper for us — it’s genuinely the better fit for our water and our winters.
- Copper where it earns it Short high-heat runs off the water heater, exposed exterior lines that see sunlight, or a spot where a homeowner specifically wants it — those we do in copper. It’s about matching the pipe to the run, not picking one material for the whole house on principle.
- Why people repipe in the first place A lot of Louisville repipes happen because old copper started springing pinhole leaks from the inside, or old galvanized steel rusted closed. If that’s what’s driving your job, replacing failing copper with more copper isn’t automatically the answer — PEX sidesteps the exact failure mode you’re trying to escape.

Is PEX as good as copper?
